Extended BiO

Full Extended bio

Darryl Dwayne Walker is a multifaceted artist, actor, television correspondent, creative director, educator, and movement specialist whose work is grounded in purpose, cultural storytelling, and transformative expression. Originally from Norfolk, Virginia, Darryl’s career is a vibrant fusion of performance, media, visual art, and community engagement.

He first rose to prominence as the on-air entertainment correspondent for Montage, a lifestyle and culture TV series that aired for three seasons across major markets including Atlanta, Washington D.C., New York City, and California. Darryl brought charisma, cultural fluency, and authenticity to the screen — talents he continues to expand in his recurring role as Maurice Caldwell on the web series Talks With Myself (Seasons 3–6).

Darryl’s career began while earning his BFA with a concentration in fashion marketing — a time that sparked his journey as a dancer and performing artist. Touring nationally, he shared the stage with R&B heavyweights including Mario, Monica, T.R.U, Carl Thomas, and Cheri Dennis. His stage presence led him to the Off-Broadway production Cain and Able, starring Grammy Award-winning artist Fred Hammond. As a choreographer and creative director, he has collaborated with acclaimed talent such as Darrell “Tank” Babbs (Atlantic Records) and Emmy-nominated actress Aunjanue Ellis (Lovecraft Country).

In 2025, Darryl took on a career-defining role as a principal cast member in the Off-Broadway revival of George C. Wolfe’s seminal play The Colored Museum — a powerful and satirical exploration of Black identity in America. His performance further cemented his reputation as a dynamic storyteller with deep emotional and cultural range.

His creative vision also extends behind the scenes. In the indie feature Incomplete, Darryl led costume and wardrobe design for the entire cast — merging style, storytelling, and character-building into a cohesive visual language. Currently based in Newark, New Jersey, Darryl serves as the Manager of Community Engagement at The Newark Museum of Art. In this role, he bridges the museum’s mission with meaningful community programming, drawing on his years of experience as a former Creative Director and Performing Arts Educator for the museum’s summer theater initiatives. He is also the host and producer of #HappyHourNMOA: Art, Culture & Spirits, a lively digital talk series sponsored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka as part of the museum’s virtual programming slate 2020 - 2022.

As a digital and mixed media artist, Darryl uses photography and performative visuals to reframe narratives around Black identity, power, and beauty. His work has been exhibited at The Newark Museum of Art, The Newark Arts Festival (2023), NMOA Community Gallery 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and the Prospect St. Firehouse Cultural Center (2018). His artistic practice is rooted in amplifying stories that too often go untold — reclaiming the lens through which Black life is viewed, celebrated, and preserved. Darryl lives by the mantra: “I dream in color as I paint my dreams into reality.” And whether on stage, behind the lens, or in community, he continues to turn those dreams into spaces for truth, artistry, and transformation.

Artist Statement

Artist   |   Actor   |   Creative Director

As a dancer and performing artist, storytelling is the heartbeat of my creative practice. My work across digital photography, mixed media, and performative art is rooted in the intention to capture truth — to freeze time and amplify the presence, beauty, and resilience of Black lives. I am most drawn to telling the stories of people of color, whose cultural contributions have shaped the world yet are too often overlooked, misrepresented, or erased.

Through my lens, I aim to reclaim the narrative. The camera becomes a portal — not just for documenting moments, but for reframing identity. In a world where Black bodies are frequently depicted through distorted, limited, or harmful perspectives, I choose to center our joy, our pain, our power, and our humanity. This act of framing us as we see ourselves— rather than how history has sought to define us — is both resistance and restoration.

I believe art is a universal language that transcends borders, systems, and silence. It allows us to speak our truths in bold, unfiltered color. My work seeks to challenge the dominant lens that has too long painted Black people as one-dimensional: defeated, dangerous, or disposable. Instead, I offer nuance, complexity, and authenticity. I strive to create immersive experiences that are not viewed from a distance, but felt from within — storytelling by the people, for the people.

I tell our stories — the joyful, the painful, the messy, and the miraculous — because they deserve to be seen in full. This is not about perfection. This is about power, reclamation, and legacy. I dream in color, and through my art, I invite others to do the same.
